National Science Foundation Special Reports are in-depth features within the NSF website that focus on highlights of NSF-funded research using interactive multimedia, including Flash, video, animation and audio. Recently S2N was the subject of considerable acclaim for its production of three of these Special Reports: X-treme Microbes, U.S. South Pole Station, and The Secret Lives of Wild Animals.

X-treme Microbes, a highlight of the homepage of the National Science Foundation, covers the strange microbes called ‘extremophiles’ because of their ability to live in shocking extremes of cold, heat, pressure, acidity and more. Research on these strange organisms is redefining the limits of life on Earth and, perhaps, on other worlds.

The Secret Lives of Wild Animals examines how modern technologies like global tracking systems and ultraminiaturized sensors now provide researchers with intimate glimpses of rarely seen behaviors of wild animals. The NAGC Gold Screen Awards honored this site with a First Place award.

U.S. South Pole Station explores a uniquely designed high-tech haven that supports research and houses the scientists and others who keep the effort going year-round in the most forbidding environment on Earth. At its recent Gold Screen Awards, the National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC) awarded this site an Award of Excellence.
